History graduates by train.puff |
| Mike, Eileen and Polly time-travel back to England in WWII to make first-hand observations of civilian behaviour. It is not as straightforward as they might hope and, after several weeks, they find that their 'drops' won’t open and they can not regain their own time. Blackout has a bit of a slow start, but the background is necessary as it offers clues to why they are trapped and how they are to survive in situations that they haven't studied. They like the 'contemps 'who don't know what is to happen next, with the added stress of believing that their actions might change history |

'Blackout' by Connie Willis by thorntn |
| The Oxford 2060 historian frequently travel to the past and future. In this novel we see four young historians travel to WW2 to observe events. Mike is sent to observe Dover and Dunkirk evacuations, Polly is to observe shop girls and people of London during the Blitz, Eileen is sent to Warwickshire to a manor which is taking care of young evacuees from London and Phipps purpose is a little secretive. When there time drops don't work to return home Eileen and Mike make their way to London to use Eileen's drop but when they discover that her drop is also broken and no retrieval teams have been sent they decide to seek out Phipps.
This is a really good book. Very well researched and written. Characters and events are so real. I could not put this book down and I look forward to reading book 2 - All Clear |

| Summary: |
When a time-travel lab suddenly cancels assignments for no apparent reason and switches around everyone's schedules, time-traveling historians Michael, Merope, and Polly find themselves in World War II, facing air raids, blackouts, unexploded bombs, dive-bombing Stukas, rationing, shrapnel, V-1s, and two of the most incorrigible children in all of history--to say nothing of a growing feeling that not only their assignments but the war and history itself are spiraling out of control. |
