| thomas is surely one of the great pragmatists of all time. Here he is give an almost sympathetic portrayal. |

Comes in the demanding category, even for those who know a fair amount about Henry VIII and the Reformation by Andrew Fitch |
| Comes in the demanding category, even for those who know a fair amount about Henry VIII and the Reformation. I was continually having to remind myself of the dynastic relationships. The narrative voice is unusual (He, Cromwell) as if there is an indeterminate self midway between reader and first person who is observing Thomas's meteoric rise to King's favourite. The characters of such figures as Cardinal Wolsey, Sir Thomas More, Anne Boleyn and the King himself are such complex realisations, it's hard not to visualise oneself being there- a risky situation in dangerous times.
